Do we live our lives based on sayings and cliche’s?

You know, if people would just take one day at a time, and just stop and smell the roses once in awhile, they wouldn’t feel pushed up against a brick wall. When your like a rock in a hard place, it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, you know? All I know for sure, is that a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, and that if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. So all in all, I hope you and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving and just remember, this is the only time of the year that you can give your family the bird and tell them to stuff it!

I think this is very interesting, I’d love to debate whether these sayings express common emotions and situations inevitably played out by many human beings over many hundreds or thousands of years, or whether they are empty words that deaden communication and expression of the individual experience. In fact I’m going to the Ask A Linguist website:

which is a Q&A a bit like yahoo answers, but all the answerers are professional academic linguists. I’ve asked them about accents for part of my coursework and they’re fascinating. I’ll be back when this is resolved to tell you what they say!
I guess the reason some things become sayings or cliches is because people believe in them, or they articulate something deeper that resonates with a group of people who will re-use and spread the saying. So these phrases stick around because they maybe do put into words some Big Life Emotional Stuff.
So it is “I’m good”, or something trivial about the weather, as really it’s the simple social interaction that acquaintances will feel most comfortable with, as well as working as an acknowledgment each other. In a kind-of replacement for bottom-sniffing. Perhaps.
Not sure about the mortgage stuff though. Sounds pretty advanced for small talk
