Congressman Paul, a question for one of your colleagues on stage.
REP. PAUL: My — my question is for Senator McCain.
This is an economic question that I wanted to ask. It has to do with the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets.
I’d like to know what your opinion is of this and whether you would keep it in place, what their role would be, or you would get rid of this group. And if you kept the group, would you make sure we would see some sunlight and know what they’re doing and how they’re being involved in our markets?
SEN. MCCAIN: Well, obviously we’d like to see more sunshine.
But I as president, as every other president, rely primarily on my secretary of the Treasury, on my Council of Economic Advisers, on the head of that. I would rely on the circle that I have developed over many years of people like Jack Kemp, Phil Gramm, Warren Rudman, Pete Peterson and the Concord group. I have a process of leadership, Ron, that is sort of an inclusive one that I have developed, a circle of acquaintances and people that are supporters and friends of mine who I have worked with for many, many years.
REP. PAUL: So you’d get rid of the group?
SEN. MCCAIN: You remember back in 1982 when Phil Gramm — Phil Gramm and Warren Rudman and Gramm-Latta and all of those people got the first real tax cuts done, the real — first real restraints in taxes. I was there. You were there. And I rely on those people to a much larger degree than any, quote, “formal” organization, although the secretary of Treasury is obviously one of the key and important posts that I would have.
We haven’t had an economist in the Whitehouse since Jefferson, and we don’t need one. That’s what advisors are for. Where we need more economists is in Congress. They’re the ones with the checkbook.
He will be able to handle the economy. Anyone who lives through 5+ years of torture can handle pretty much anything. Besides all Presidents have to go through a learning phase at the beginning.
No…but what makes you think Obama understands it any better? He has yet to lay out any detailed plans for the economy either and his general plan of “Spend ourselves out of debt” seems to go against common sense. Neither of them are economists. They will both need the help of “experts” in the field. It comes down more to how good their judgment is when appointing those experts and taking their advice.
That is what cabinet members and advisors are for. I am more concerned about what will happen to our economy if we pull out of the Middle East and have to fight the terrorists on our own soil. That is why I am voting for John McCain.
So you would rather have someone who will lie to you and tell you what you want to hear? I think it is good that he admits that he is not a expert on economics. That is why he can appoint someone who is to advise him.
a word to the wise – when looking for objective, unbiased information on a candidate, dont use sites and resources sponsored by his or her adversaries.
Even if he doesn’t understand it as well as he should, he still understands it a heck of a lot better than the alternative candidate (a socialist/communist).
McCain said … “The issue of economics is something that I’ve really never understood as well as I should. I understand the basics, the fundamentals, the vision, all that kind of stuff,” he said. “But I would like to have someone I’m close to that really is a good strong economist. As long as Alan Greenspan is around I would certainly use him for advice and counsel.”
Your vid showed a supporting response to a question asked by ron paul… the short of it is, every person has strong points, and I would rather have a President, a Leader, who can admit their shortcomings, and accept advice from those around them.. to expect 1 man to be an expert in every issue confronting our Nation, is beyond ludicrous, and in fact would eliminate obama as well…
Probably not, but that can be fixed by surrounding yourself with the right advisors. Mitt Romney as VP would be a big help in this area. A president does not need to be nor can he be an expert in all issues.
No president knows everything he needs to know to run the country!
That is why they have advisors!
And that is why Bush was such a failure – he picked advisors so poorly!
So which candidate has had the most questionable record in who he choses as an advisor!
Obama had a racist conpiracy freak as an advisor for 20 years! And a very close relationship with Rezko, now convicted of 19 counts of corrupotion & fraud! And at least somewhat close to Ayers who said right after 9/11 that he regretted not setting off MORE bombs!
I don’t find it disturbing that McCain and Obama are both short on economics training. McCain admits his shortcomings and will no doubt make an extraordinary effort to surround himself with free market, “Friedman School” economists who have dominated US economic policy through Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush administrations — a period of unprecedented economic expansion spanning over 25 years.
Obama, on the other hand, spurns free market capitalism. He wants to raise taxes during a recession, compel oil companies to spend profits in government proscribed ways, federalize the healthcare system, raise payroll taxes and embargo free trade from the lowest cost providers of goods to American families. These are discredited Keynesian/Socialist policies justly abandoned after the Carter Era collasped the American economy in a heap.
So which is worse: 1. a guy who admits that he will reach out and seek advice from experts whose views have created a generation and a half of wealth building; or 2. a guy who claims to understand economics but advocates economic policies that have not only failed in the US in the past but also are failing all over the world in the present.
There is something wrong with a society that expects its leaders to have expertise in everything when the wisdom to know where we need to seek expertise is the more realistic and valuable asset in governing the most influential country in the world.
The Obama-nation just can’t handle the fact that McCain is a different kind of candidate who loves honesty and his country more than his party — so he takes it from all sides.
An afterthought. The mortgage industry finally started lending to the very people the Dems claimed were being redlined by lenders and the mortgage crisis was born. A lot of banks, foreign and domestic, lost money lending to the poor and the unqualified. Next time you hear about banks descriminating against working people or inner city people remember that you want Phil Gramm to lobby to make such loans illegal. And be sure to remember the number of people who haven’t defaulted or been foreclosed upon who siezed the easy credit to acquire a home of their — let’s be sure to blame Phil Gramm for that too. You can’t win either way with the left in America.
If he doesn’t we dont have a prayer because Obama is sure as hell doesn’t. I am not overjoyed knowing McCain will be our next president probably for a totally different reason than you. I am a conservative, we believe in you having the right to go for lofty goals or set back and accept the life you live but leave the choice to you, not Washington, We believe that We the citizens do a better job of handling our finanses than Washington ever has or ever will. We believe in believing in our Families as the true tie that binds not strangers. We believe our nations boarders are an epademic and destroying the power of the middle class citizen. We believe our nation Must be protected if we are to survive. John McCain is a liberal for the most part. His actions speak louder than words! He is best friends with Ted Kennedy and wrote with him the bill to give amnesty to all the millions of CRIMINALS also known as mexican undocumented who dont bother to learn english but push for more spanish spoken. and they are backed by Mexicans accross the nation that do speak english but deliberatly push spanish when they shop, eat, etc. you think I’m wrong? come down to southern California and go to the Inland empire and simply go to a mall, filling station, anywhere at all if they are brown they are speaking spanish and I am fed up with paying for Illegals crossing the boarder , taking good paying jobs , not jobs Americans wont do!, using medical to pay for doctors, lowering our schools to near 3rd world status, and the state wants more Money from Tax’s Only legal workers pay those! Obamas a Economic disaster McCain will only be a bruiser.
you mean as well as Bush?

Nope McCain already said he know nothing about the economy the only thing he knows is WAR.
Better than Jimmy Carter, Barrack Obama and 3/4 of Congress. Candor is a rare trait; especially for a politician. Good Man.
