If the Republicans propose a singular, serious economic idea other than “let’s do exactly what we were doing immediately preceding the recession and hope it turns out different this time,” they will become a serious option in my book.
So far, though, the collapse of the housing and credit markets have had absolutely zero impact on the Republican anti-regulatory platform. The only hint that they’ve even noticed the recession at all is that they’ve used it as a convenient issue to blame on the President who came into office in the middle of it.
wow….there was no problem with the economy until the dems took control of congress in 2006…you keep blaming republicans but democrats were in charge of congress for the last 2 years of Bush
It doesn’t. for all the screaming rageful teabaggers out there in REAL america screaming about deficits and spending; this ‘plan’ does nothing but take us back to right where we were. complete pandering for votes. wash, rinse, and repeat.
Those “tax cuts” will tack on $700 Billion to the national debt after 10 years. There’s no such thing as a “free lunch”, America. Tax cuts eventually come back to bite you in the butt.
it’s not. you’re exactly right, by going back to 3-5 years ago we will be set up for a repeat of a fallen economy.
banks will make risky loans, and not have enough capital on hand to cover defaults. It may not be on homes, but it will be on something else.
@Ron R: Since you claim it was Dems who actually took over at the beginning of 2007, please tell me what Dems did that cause an economic crash within ONE YEAR. 2008 was a disaster, and was started while Repubs were in office.
If Dems passed something in that first year that cause the crash, please tell me what it was.
well the fact is that republicans usually want the same thing for this country and what we want does not change just to get votes
liberals like to say just what will get them more votes
republicans ,real republicans stay true to their beliefs ..
The housing fiasco was caused by dead beats buying homes an not paying there mortgage.Blame everybody you want but if they paid what they owed things would be fine.
Well, I definitely want better than how it was during the Bush administration. However if we did return to how it was during the Bush administration it would be a significant improvement over how it is now.
The health care reform we got is a dismal quagmire of higer insurance costs instead of lower, also higer taxes as a result. At least you did say tax cuts for all and not just the top earners as some incorrectly say.
What regulation are you speaking of? and you know you cant get a 0 down insterest only loan unless you yourself applied for it and signed the papers. ( personal responsibility is just lost on alot of people )
Once again, I am hopefull for better, but it returns as you said, it will be a significant improvement.
You weren’t supposed to notice that, or that neither Medicare nor Social Security was discussed. Or why they want to cut government spending when we have a problem now with unemployment.
Don’t they realize that ordering cheaper pencils aren’t going to give them that kind of savings?
Only firing people who work for the government is going to do that. And that’s a whole lot of people, middle managers, college grads, law enforcement etc, going on the dole.
So its business as usual, telling us that proven failures will return, that we are going to be subject to paying for health insurance, with the insurers making the rules without any protection for the people who expect to get what they have been paying for when they need it.
Its so sad a ‘Pledge” that its really insulting more than anything else.
You do realize that a consumer doesn’t tell a bank to write them a loan on their terms, I’m glad to see, some people forget that if a bank doesn’t think the guy with the mortgage is a good risk they don’t have to write the loan.
No customer or law, told banks to write or make up, no money down, balloon payments, no verifiable income needed loans, that was their idea and they could always say no based on income. The law covered banks that weren’t writing loans based on location, it didn’t tell banks to lend to bad financial risks.
There was no pledge 3-5 years ago, but to answer the rest of your question We will cut a lot deeper than that, but don`t want all the bums freaking out about it ahead of time.
Well, now, it’s like this. Right now, there is no solution. No solution at all. We can’t tax the rich because they can’t afford it. We can’t tax anyone else because they don’t have any money. So, the neo-cons are saying there is nothing at all that can be done. So why not go back to W and bin Cheney and trickle down? Look, it crashed the economy, but that’s better than doing nothing. See?
You are correct, they are not sticking their neck out on this one. I think this may have been a wrong move for them. The republicans were doing their best work by merely allowing the Democrats to hang themselves. So your choices are:
Republicans….. won’t actually define a path to take other than “Dems messed up.”
Democrats….. can’t say much else but “We don’t suck as bad as Republicans.”
Welcome to Tea country!
By the way, tax cuts for everyone puts more money in taxpayers pockets. How can that be bad?
The banking question is an entirely different situation.
at least they are saying they want to do it for the citizens, rather than the democrats telling the public what they the democrats want and that we the people should just shut-up and do as they say,the liberal policy of telling everyone else what is best for them according to what the liberal thinks is best, this current administration is the perfect example,if the american majority is against something they just force it down our throats and completely ignore the wishes of the people, they choose to put the wishes, wants and needs of the few above the wishes, wants and needs of the many[ healthcare, immigration, cap and trade, taxes, ground zero mosque.
The arrogance of the ones currently in power is more blatant and obvious than it has ever been,it is all about advancing the liberal agenda, the actual welfare and safety of this nation and it’s people take a back seat to the desires and wants of the liberal elites in power now.
The republicans are paying attention to the growing anger and frustration of the nation as a whole while the democrats seem to want to go on with business as usual all the time lying and saying it is getting better thinking that we the people are to stupid or blind to see that they are not being honest with us,they still are trying to march us towards some european model of a socialist democracy while ignoring the fact that it is failing there and europe is starting to look for a better system, liberals do not care about this country they are only concerned with their agenda and what they want for everyone else.
It’s not, they are just counting on Americans being stupid and having short memories, which unfortunately in many cases is the truth.
They didn’t have one then. Sorry the talking points got to you so late.
During good economic times it was just foolish. Now it’s criminally insane!
They slapped on a different cover page.
If the Republicans propose a singular, serious economic idea other than “let’s do exactly what we were doing immediately preceding the recession and hope it turns out different this time,” they will become a serious option in my book.

SMoke, mirror, rhetorics and divisiveness at play. Be careful how you drive.
The difference…people will vote for them now because the tables have turned and people are disgusted with Democrats once more.

I don’t know or care. A pledge from US rich class holds the full value of being robbed blind while being oppressed as an ignorant slave.
Pass the pledge on to the ignorant. They don’t want me speaking on it.

This time they actually read it, and remain baffled.
